They Just Don’t Understand

In Facebook on February 2, 2011 by radioray1025 Tagged: ,

There have been a ton of posts and stories lately about Facebook. Dan O’Day had posted a story of talent on air and radio stations begging and approaching Facebook incorrectly in his view. I’ve read Fox news reports saying Facebook has jumped the shark and is over.

Then the CMA begins a promotion for a Music Festival announcement. “Like our Facebook page and the lineup announcement will appear in your news feed February 8.”

Probably not.

The issue is the Facebook news feed algorithm. There are three specific elements to the way news feeds work. The CMA is missing two of the three.

If the goal is new participants on the CMA Facebook page, it’s very likely this promotion will not work. If you want to get the word out to your already engaged group of 299,159 fans , you probably got a winner.

If you know why the CMA plan won’t work, you are an advanced Facebook user. Congratulations.

If you’re puzzled, make time to come to the Albright and O’Malley pre-seminar March 1 for my presentation “Facebook–the Freeway of Love”. If I were the CMA, I’d use Twitter for their project. At least the message will get delivered.
